Is Story at the Heart of Community?

A Playback Theatre Performance.

In Playback Theatre shared experiences and personal stories are brought to life by the actors and musicians in an event that can be heartwarming, fun and profound. We will reflect on the festival vibe, the funny moments, the mishaps, the oddities and unique moments that have brought us together in Doneraile. Is story at the heart of community? How does it connect us? What will we take away with us as we gather our story threads to weave into the future…?

Workshop – Saturday, November 27, 2010
The Flying Enterprise, South Gate, Cork
10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Our  lives could at any moment include the challenges of having a mental health problem. Yet for many people when this happens the reaction of society can sometimes be worse than the problem itself.  Prejudice and discrimination deny people with mental health problems the opportunity to live their lives to the full. Many people do not realise that this is a discrimination issue much like sexism, racism or ageism.

In a very unique way this issue will be explored through Playback theatre, where audience members will be invited to share their stories and experiences.  The first session of Hear My Voice on 19 November 2010 will be an evening where people’s stories are brought to life in this special performance.

The second session on 27 November 2010 will explore more deeply the stories and issues we come to face with when we look at people’s experiences of mental health problems and discrimination. We will use gentle creative approaches to help us focus on the stories and play with possibilities for change.

Have you a personal experience on this issue? Or do you just want to learn more about this? Whether you are someone who has mental health problems, a family member, a friend, a professional, a politician or a child, your voices and your stories can be heard. We each have the power to bring about change. Through the telling of our tales we will understand this issue and consider the possibilities for challenging prejudice and discrimination.

Playback performance will gather new stories for this exciting project.

Through our Playback theatre performance we hope to initiate a theatrical dialogue, addressing our complicated relationship to the natural environment.  In particular we’re going to explore the difficult decisions we  have to make everyday. We hope you’ll enjoy sharing your stories with us as we discover new connections and collective experiences!
